Who is Jillian Spellman?
Jillian Spellman was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on November 28th, 1980. Jillian later moved to Port Charlotte, Florida where she was raised by her grandparents. Since Jillian was little she has always been acting. Growing up she watched Saturday Night Live and would write and video tape sketches with her sister, Janet. Since then has dreamed about being on it. "As a kid I wanted to be on SNL so bad I would sneak out and turn on the tv. Even if I got in trouble it was worth it. I knew SNL was where I belonged. So, until Lorne Michels finds that milk carton and realizes that I am missing, I guess I will have to wait." As she got older she grew to like the styles of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Kattan, Rachel Dratch, Mike Myers and Adam Sandler.
Jillian started acting in 2nd Grade. In Middle School she had every single lead role in all 8 plays that were performed. During her last year they had an acting award show. When she didn't win best actress, she asked, "what am i doing wrong, that I didn't win. I got the best reviews in each play, I don't understand?" Her teacher, Ms. Turansky replied, "You would have won hands down but, you chewed gum in class 5 times and I had to mark you down." Lets thank god, the oscars aren't this way!
During High School Jillian was a writer/reporter for the school and did the live news every day. Jillian also was an assistant director for "My Fair Lady", along with taking choir for all four years. Jillian says "performing has always been second nature to me, I could never see myself doing anything else. It's one thing to perform and its another thing to make someone laugh when they are having a bad day. I am the first one my friends call when there down, that makes me happy."
While in high school Jillian was in the drama club and wanted to know how to make it on SNL. Jillian went to snl.com and found that the only way to make it on the show was by doing comedy shows in New York and by luck perhaps being discovered. Her response to this was, "I was no stand up comic and the fact that the site said you have be discovered was a crushing experience. I gave up my SNL dream that day and dropped out of all things drama. There was no talk of Second City I had no Idea what it was. If I had known I would have never gave up I would have went there immediatley. If it wasn't for Tina Fey I would still being a struggling songwriter in Nashville. Which was not what I really wanted. The day I found out about Second City I called friends and family crying. I was so happy!"
At 21, Jillian moved to California and went to college to major in theater. Where she wrote several comedy sketches and re-created and performed SNL sketches. Some sketches were: Gilda Radners, "Judy Miller show", "Weekend Update" and, "Mary Catherine" (Super Star). Although she was a straight "A" theater student, after taking all the theater classes she could she dropped out. "I regret it a little bit now I wish I would have stayed and learned a little more, anything aside from theater bored me."
Jillian also worked for "Just Shoot Me, "Will and Grace", "Less then Perfect" and many others as a studio page. Jillian says "I never got star struck, even before working there. Other pages would freak out when they saw a 'celebrity' talking to me. I was like whatever, im going to craft services to get a diet coke, I didn't care. Then they would wonder why no one ever approched them, maybe it was because they were shaking and staring affectionatley."
After a few years she left and moved where she has always wanted to, Nashville Tennessee. "Aside from acting I always liked songwriting and I sang in my high school for all four years. It was a passion I had so I decided to move. Once I got there I kept writing scripts and sketches, joining theater schools and thats when I heard about Second City from Tina Fey and started making plans to move to Chicago."
At this time Jillian resides in Chicago, IL and is working as a photo tech while attending school at, Second City. "It's weird I came to Nashville, TN to be a songwriter and I have done nothing but visit the blue bird a few times. Who would of thought that God would bring me here to figure out that this is not where I belonged. I can't wait to work on the stage of STUDIO 8H and finally be, home."
